Applications are invited from suitably qualified applicants for the post of Professor/Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Geography Education, Department of Languages & Social Sciences Education, Faculty of Education.

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to: (i) teach Geography Education courses to graduate and undergraduate students; (ii) provide academic leadership through the enhancement of teaching, research, professional and community engagement; (iii) take an active part in the supervision and assessment of graduate and undergraduate students’ research projects; (iv) carry out any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Head of Department.

Requirements:

Professor: Candidates should have: (i) a Doctorate in Geography Education or related field; (ii) a Master degree in Geography Education or related field; (iii) a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography Education or related field; (iv) have at least nine (9) years of relevant teaching experience at university or comparable institution; (v) have a minimum of twenty four (24) pieces of research products (e.g. articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc.) published by recognized publishers. Twelve (12) of these must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases. The remaining twelve (12) publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc. published by recognized publishers. An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality and standing of the publisher (vi) sustained research output: a minimum of three (3) peer reviewed publications (e.g. journal articles, book chapter, peer reviewed conference proceedings etc. every four years; (vii) sustained research activity: on-going externally supported research (e.g. funded/commissioned); (viii) paper/poster presentations at international conferences at least once every two years; (ix) the candidate must be first author in at least one-quarter of the required journal publications, depending on disciplinary expectations. There should be evidence of mentorship of early career scholars/graduate students (x) publications are spread internationally and across journals; (xi) significant research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (at least three of these); (xii) recognized as being of national and international research standing (e.g. peer reviewing of new research proposals; reference in research committees; editor/reviewer for refereed/accredited national and international publishers; editorial board member of international publishers in a relevant field; invitations as keynote speaker at national and international conferences (at least three of these); (xiii) research collaborations with other institutions or organizations; (xiv) research collaboration with cognate disciplines in the University; (xv) successful supervision of four Masters students or co-supervision of six Masters students or supervision of two PhD student or co-supervision of four PhD students; (xvi) external examiner for Masters and/or PhD theses internationally; (xvii) evidence of governance and social engagement activities; and (xviii) Demonstration of effective leadership in the area of Geography Education, etc. Research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate will be an added advantage.

Associate Professor: The candidate should have: (i) a Doctorate in Geography Education or related field; (ii) a Master degree in Geography Education or related field; (iii) a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography Education or related field (iv) have at least six (6) years of relevant teaching experience at university or comparable institution; (v) have a minimum of twelve (12) pieces of research products (e.g. articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc.) published by recognized publishers. 1.0 Programme Goals

The goals of the M. Ed (EE) programme are to:

provide top-level human resources for the formulation and implementation of environmental education policies;
produce reflexive professionals in the area with specific ability to diagnose needs, problems, aspirations and integrate environmental and sustainability issues into learning objectives for their clients and communities;
contribute to the enrichment of the graduate programmes and enhance their relevance to the needs of Botswana, the sub-region and beyond;
increase postgraduate and research outputs
build capacity and competencies in dealing with emerging socio-ecological risks and respond appropriately within the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) framework and initiatives.

2.0 Departmental Special Regulations

Subject to the provisions of General Regulations 400 and the Faculty of Education Special Regulations 41.0 the following Departmental Special Regulations shall apply:

Departmental Special Regulations for The Master of Education Degree in Religious Education and Social Studies Education has two specialisations: the Master of Education in Religious Education and the Master of Education in Social Studies Education. Subject to the provisions of General Regulations 400 and the Faculty of Education Special Regulations 41.0, the Following Departmental Special Regulations shall apply:

1.0 Entrance Requirements

1.1 The normal minimum entrance requirements for admission to the Master of Education Programme are as follows:

a) A relevant Bachelor of Education Degree from this or any recognised university or an equivalent institution with at least a 2 or its equivalent or:

b) A relevant Bachelor’s Degree of this University with at least a second class, second division plus at least a credit in the concurrent Diploma in Education or pass in the Post 4844��Ѹ�� Diploma in Education. Equivalent qualifications from other recognised academic institutions will be considered.

1.2 A relevant Bachelor’s Degree of this University at pass level with at least credit in the Post 4844��Ѹ�� Diploma in Education.

1.3 At least two years of appropriate professional experience which may be acquired concurrently with part-time studies.

1.4 At least two satisfactory professional references, and evidence of potential to perform successfully in a 4844��Ѹ�� Level Programme.

1.5 A satisfactory interview may be required.

1.6 With the approval of Senate, equivalent qualifications and experience may be accepted. Such candidates may be required to perform successfully on an admission examination or satisfy other requirements as is deemed appropriate by the Faculty of Education.

1.7 Master’s Level work in Religious Education/Social Studies Education must be preceded by sufficient undergraduate work in that field or a related field to satisfy the Board of the Department of Languages and Social Sciences Education that he candidate is likely to be successful.

1.8 Candidates may be required to take and pass pre-requisite courses, which are deemed by he Board to be necessary or desirable. Such prerequisites may be required prior to admission to the Master’s Programme or prior to commencing a particular module or prior to the granting of the degree. Prerequisite courses will not earn credit towards Degree Requirements.
