Duration: 1 year for the initial appointment (with possibility for renewal for a total of 2 years of postdoctoral fellowship)

JOB SUMMARY

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be joining ongoing and planned studies using implementation research to improve primary care in Botswana.

As a member of the research team the fellow will use their research skills to address a range of implementation research questions relevant for improving primary care in Botswana focusing on non-communicable diseases, aging, and other relevant challenges in improving the health of the population in Botswana Activities will include qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis, and dissemination (e.g., writing papers and developing academic and community presentations) for research on access and delivery of primary care-based care and other interventions to improve population health and inform policy and planning.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow should bring strong qualitative analytical skills (and ability to work with a team of biostatisticians and other experts in behavioral science, clinical medicine and primary care) with experience in health-related research and ideally implementation and primary care research. Other preferred skills include knowledge of health systems strengthening and research, mixed methods, and experience in the field of primary care and chronic diseases research.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Support development of existing and new study protocols and study tools;
Lead development of publications and support other co-authors in dissemination work;
Work as part of the research team to meet the objectives and deliver the research outputs of the research, including data collection, data extraction, analysis and reporting writing;
Supervising and providing capacity building for junior researchers and research assistants;
Support grant writing including proposing new projects

Qualifications:

▪ Doctorate (PhD and/or MD) in implementation science, global health, public health, health systems, health economics, psychology, social work, counselling or other discipline with focus on mixed methods research

▪ Strong skills and experience in quantitative analysis, qualitative data analysis, and/or dissemination & implementation research

▪ Preferred: Prior experience conducting global implementation research

▪ Previous scientific publications in relevant research demonstrating strong writing skills

▪ Strong work ethic and commitment to implementation research in primary care

▪ Interest in mentoring and capacity building

▪ Excellent oral and written communication skills and fluency in spoken and written English.

Appointment:

Requirements:

Senior Lecturer: the successful applicant should have: (i) at least a Master of Medicine (MMed) or equivalent PLUS evidence of subspecialty, preferably Hematology, Gastro-Enterology or Rhumatology; (ii) a first degree in medicine (MBBS, MBChB, MD or equivalent qualification) from a recognised institution; (iii) the qualification must be registered with or registrable by the Botswana Health Professions Council with a specialist status; (iv) at least 3 years relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; or 1 year of sustained mentorship/practice related training which would be considered as an alternative; (v) an excellent cumulative and sustained record of research and publication and experience in supervising students’ research projects; (vi) at least 6 pieces of research products, 3 of which must be articles in refereed/accredited journals indexed in internationally recognised indexing databases; (vii) sustained research output e.g. a minimum of 1 peer-reviewed publication per year or new clinical excellence output every 2 years in 6 years or since last appointment; (viii) sustained research activity (ongoing internally and externally funded research projects); (ix) be first and/or last author in at least 2 refereed journal articles or book chapters; (x) publications should be spread nationally and/or internationally and across journals; (xi) some research impact, including but not limited to citations (excluding self-citations), the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, clinical effectiveness, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions, etc. (xii) recognised as being of at least national research or effective clinical professional standing; (xiii) evidence of governance, professional and community engagement.

Key Performance Areas

The successful appointee will be required to perform tasks necessary for the safe and complete delivery of the procedures outlined in study protocols to the highest standard.

Amongst other responsibilities, they will be required to:

Contribute to the day-to-day management of all active trials, ensuring compliance with international standards of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) with the Management Team
Assist in the preparation of study materials
Assist in all clinical aspects of active studies ensuring that they are carried out within the Hospital’s and Sponsor’s policies, research governance, Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority, and Amended Regulations 2006 Incorporating International Conference on Harmonisation of Good Clinical Practice (ICH GCP) and any other applicable laws and regulations
Play an active role in the study team to ensure that;
- The clinical team adheres to the set standard operating procedures in the conduct of clinical trials and that all staff are full trained in the SOPs pertaining to their daily work.
- The data collection process is enhanced for quality with quality control measures in place.
- The recruitment/ accrual targets are being met.
- Proper source documentation procedures are followed timeously.
Liaise with data team to ensure there is updated data analysis plan
Lead in the drafting and or amendment of study protocol in consultation with the study Principal Investigator.
Initiate writing, refining and submission of manuscripts to relevant journals in liaison with the study Principal Investigator.
Prepare relevant training materials, as well as conduct trainings to facilitate study protocol implementation.
Contribute to the resolution of any ensuing data queries in a timely manner
Make presentations on behalf of study team at local and international fora

Supervise nursing and clinical study teams and ensure that they are trained in SOPs pertaining to their daily work

Oversee all clinical procedures including dispensing of study drugs to study participants, collection of laboratory samples, and other protocol-related procedures
Any other duties as requested by the Chief Investigator.

Qualifications and experience

Medical degree e.g. MD, MB ChB, MBBS.
At least three(3) years working experience post qualification
Training and experience in HIV/AIDS management
Post graduate training in research will be an added advantage
Must be knowledgeable on HIV/AIDS prevention and care
Must be registered with the Botswana Health Professions Council( BHPC)

Competencies

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Excellent time management
Strong presentation skills
Computer literate

LECTURER IN INTERNAL MEDICINE & NEUROLOGY

VACANCY NO: FM/IM 1/2020

Duties: The successful candidates will: (i) teach undergraduate medical students and postgraduate residents; (ii) conduct research and/or creative professional works in his/her areas of expertise and supervise medical students’ research projects (iii) provide service to the university, profession and community (iv) provide clinical care in affiliated hospitals; and (v) carry out any other duties as assigned by the head of the department.

Requirements: (i) at least a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery or other recognized Medical doctor qualification (MD) (ii) a specialist qualification in Internal Medicine, & evidence of sub-specialization in neurology (iii) The qualification must be registerable by the Botswana Health Professions Council with a specialist status; (iv) Evidence of governance and social engagement; (v) experience of teaching at a university or comparable institution will be an added advantage

STAFF DEVELOPMENT FELLOW – 1 CARDIOLOGY & 1 PULMONOLOGY

Duties: The successful applicant should be able to; (i) teach undergraduates and graduate students (ii) supervise research projects, (iii) initiate, promote and participate in research; (iv) provide academic leadership through programme development and research; (v) act as a mentor to junior academic staff; (vi) participate in all academic and professional activities of UB, the Faculty and Department; (vii) provide service to the Community, University, and Profession; (viii) Carry out any other duties and responsibilities as and when assigned by the Head of Department.

Requirements: The applicants should have; (i) at least a Masters of Medicine (MMed) or equivalent; (ii) a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine (MBBS, MD, MBChB or similar) from a recognized institution; (iii) Applicants should be registered with the Botswana Health Professionals Council (BHPC). Evidence of a plan to pursue sub-specialization in cardiology or pulmonary medicine will be an added advantage.
The curriculum vitae (CV) should contain a detailed list of publications; clearly specifying titles of publications, dates published, name(s) of publishers and name(s) of co-authors if any. Publications should be categorized into: books, monographs, refereed and non-refereed journals, chapters in books, etc.
