LECTURER (3-YEAR CONTRACT)

VACANCY NO: FM/DACCM02/2023

Duties: the successful applicant will: (i) teach undergraduates and graduate students; (ii) supervise research projects; (iii) initiate, promote and participate in research; (iv) provide academic leadership through programme development and research; (v) participate in all academic and professional activities of the University, the Faculty and Department; (vi) engage with the university, profession and community; (vii) carry out any other duties and responsibilities as and when assigned by the head of department.

Requirements: the successful applicant should have: (i) at least a Masters of Medicine (MMed) or equivalent in Anaesthesiology and/or Critical Care Medicine; (ii) a first degree in medicine (MBBS, MBChB, MD) from a recognised institution; (iii) the qualification must registered with or registrable by Botswana Health Professions Council with specialist status; (iv) show evidence of engagement in research, including published journal articles, presenting scholarly work at seminars and conferences locally as well as internationally, participation in forums and collaborative programmes, participation in reference committees.

Added advantages: (i) teaching experience at a University or comparable institution; (ii) evidence of governance and social engagement.

The curriculum vitae (CV) should contain a detailed list of the publications; clearly specifying titles of publications, dates published, name(s) of publishers and name(s) of co-authors if any. Duties: The successful candidate will: (i) teach undergraduate medical students and postgraduate residents; (ii) conduct research and/or creative professional works in his/her areas of expertise and supervise medical students’ research projects; (iii) provide service to the university, profession and community; (iv) provide clinical care in affiliated hospitals; and (v) carry out any other duties as assigned by the head of the department.

Requirements:

Senior Lecturer: Candidates should have: (i) at least a Masters of Medicine (MMed) or equivalent PLUS evidence of sub-specialty; (ii) a first degree in medicine (MBBS, MD, MBChB from a recognized institution or related fields with at least a 2(i) pass / GPA of at least 3.6; (iii) at least 3 years of teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (iv) a good and sustained record of research and publications with at least 6 publications, 4 of which are peer reviewed journal articles; (v) lead and/or single author in at least 2 refereed journal articles or book chapters. The applicants should also demonstrate evidence of service. A relevant PhD and demonstration of effective academic leadership will be added advantages. ASSISTANT PROGRAMME DIRECTOR

A vacancy exists for the position of Assistant Programme Director in Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine at the 4844��Ѹ��.

The 4844��Ѹ�� (www.ub.bw) is the largest and most prestigious institution of higher learning in the country. It has opened the country’s first Faculty of Medicine and is establishing an adjacent new state-of-art 450-bed Academic Hospital. The first MBBS undergraduate intake was in August 2009. Undergraduate medical training is by a Problem Based Learning [PBL] Hybrid approach which is integrated and community oriented. A number of MMed programs are active.

Duties: (1) Assist the Head of the Department (HOD) in implementing the education of undergraduate and postgraduate students in teaching hospital as well as the National Health Laboratory. (2) Provide diagnostic support and teaching in the area of specialty (3) Assist the Head of Department in academic staff recruitment (4) Work with the Deputy Dean – Research & 4844��Ѹ�� Studies of the Faculty of Medicine, hospital (Ministry of Health) staff, Head of Department and Hospital Superintendent to set priorities in education, recruitment and infrastructure enhancement (5) Assist the HOD to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of academic programmes. (6) Act for the HOD as may be required (7) Any other duty as may be assigned by the HOD.

Requirements: (1) An undergraduate medical degree and a specialist qualification in Anaesthesia with a minimum of 5 years of post-specialization experience in professional practice in the relevant field. The qualification must be registerable by the BHPC with a specialist status (2) Must have significant experience organising training for Registrars/Residents in anaesthesia prior to appointment (3) At least 1 year of distinctive record of leadership and administration of university level institution or HOD is desirable.

Attributes and skills required: (1) Excellent communication and organizational skills (2) Strong academic leadership skills and sympathy for the values and culture of the University (3) Good management, human relations, sound analytical and coordinating skills.
