ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN FRENCH

VACANCY NO: FH/FRE 1 /2021

Duties: the successful candidate will be responsible for: (i) teaching in the area of French as a Foreign Language, cultures and civilizations of the French Speaking world; (ii) supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects; (iii) engage in research and publication and governance activities; (iv) participate in all academic and professional activities of the Department; (v) carry out any other responsibilities as and when assigned by the Head of Department; (vi) the following will be an added advantage; knowledge of new and emerging trends in teaching and learning of foreign languages programming relevant to information visualization, data mining, content representation and classification.

Requirements: the candidate should have: (i) a PhD in French Studies, French Literature or any other related field; (ii) at least 6 years relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (iii) a minimum of 12 pieces of research products (e.g. articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc.) published by recognized publishers. 8 of these must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases. The remaining 4 publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc. published by recognized publishers. An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality and standing of the publisher; (iv) sustained research output: a minimum of 2 peer reviewed publications every 3 years; (v) sustained research activity; ongoing externally supported research (e.g funded or commissioned); (vi) regular paper/poster presentations at national but also increasingly at international conferences; (vii) be lead and/or single author in at least one-third of the required journal publications. There should also be evidence of mentorship of early career scholars/graduate students; (viii) publications should be spread nationally and/or internationally and across journals; (viii) recognizable research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (required in at least 2 of the these); (ix) recognized as being of national but increasingly international research standing (e.g. peer reviewing of new research proposals; reference in research committees; editor/guest editor/reviewer of refereed/accredited national and international publishers; editorial board member of an international publisher in a relevant field; invitations as keynote speaker at national and international conferences (required in at least 2 of the these); (x) evidence of governance and social engagement; (xi) research collaborations with other institutions or organisations; (xii) research collaboration with cognate disciplines in the University; (xiii) external examiner for Masters and/or PhD theses nationally and/or internationally. The following will be added advantages: (i) research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate will be an added advantage.

NB: The curriculum vitae should contain a detailed list of published works, clearly specifying titles of publications, ISBN numbers (for books, book chapters and conference proceedings), dates of publications, names of publishers, name/s of co-authors if any and number of pages. The works should be categorized into books, book chapters, refereed journals, non-refereed works, consultancies and practical media projects.

General Information

Phenomena such as globalisation, integration and industrialisation have increased mobility within the world for economic, sociocultural and political motives hence the need for language competency. This need has equally cascaded to the professional arena whereby the world’s economic market has become cross-cultural and needs a workforce that can meet the needs of their multicultural clients. Employers want a blend of academic achievement with well-balanced intercultural skills. This can be achieved through a language competency and French has over the years taken the lead in being this language of choice in Africa and the world. Regional and International economic blocks like SADC, AU, EU and the UN are such living testimonies of the importance of French in the many economic sectors. Today’s students and professionals understand that they live in a global village and that the professional standards of excellence are now internationally shared. Acquiring the ability to speak foreign languages and to have multi/intercultural competencies are part of these standards, hence the need for French today.

This focused programme aims at producing professionals whose level of Proficiency in French is excellent and who are better equipped academically and professionally to integrate the regional and the international globalized job market.

Programme Regulations

Except as provided here, General Regulations for the Faculty of Humanities shall apply. Eligibility for admission to the programme shall be according to the General Regulations of the Faculty of Humanities and as follows:

Pre-Requisite Learning and Qualification

The profile of the students enrolling in the programme will be BA degree holders, in-service training personnel, and professionals such as teachers, translators, interpreters, journalists, diplomats, etc. from both private and public sectors, in Botswana, the Region and internationally. In accordance with the terms of the University’s Articulation, Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy, applicants from other study and work–experience backgrounds shall be considered for admission.
Eligibility for admission to the programme

Eligibility for admission to the programme shall be in accordance with:
- The Entrance Qualification of the Academic General Regulations of the School of 4844��Ѹ�� Studies (41.3): the normal minimum entrance requirement shall be a Bachelor’s degree of this or any other recognized University or equivalent institution with at least a second class, second division or equivalent (3.0 GPA, on a 5-point scale) in the relevant field. Applicants who have completed a post-graduate diploma are eligible for admission into a Master’s programme. The number of credits to be allowed towards the Master’s programme will be assessed on admission.
- The Departmental Special Regulations: a) A candidate must hold a Major in French in a Single Major or Combined-Major Bachelor degree programme, from this university or another recognized institution; or b) A degree classification of Second class second division/ 2(ii) with at least 65% in the subject French; or c) other qualifications that in the view of Senate are deemed equivalent to those in 4844��Ѹ�� School Regulations.
Credit Transfer

Students within an Exchange Programme shall benefit from the transfer of credits, as stipulated in the UB Regulations and/or Memoranda of Understanding.
Recognition of Prior Learning

The Department shall interview candidates whom it deems worthy of admission but who do not satisfy the requirements of the regulations.

Programme Structure

This NCQF level 9 two-year MA programme qualification is worth a minimum total of 252 credits and offers three specialisations:

Translation/ Interpreting
Teaching of French as a Foreign Language
Literature

The programme allocates credits as follows:

4 Core Curriculum Courses (Language, Culture And Research Methodology): 48 Credits;

10 Core courses in the chosen specialisation (Teaching French as a Foreign Language, Literature or Translation/ Interpreting): 120 credits
2 Optional courses (to be taken in any other two specialisations): 24 credits
A Research Essay (Literature) or Teaching Practice + Report (Teaching of French as a Foreign Language) or Translation Placement + Report (Translation/ Interpreting): 60 credits.

The credit weighting across the proposed programme menu of course is based on the Botswana Qualifications Authority guidelines for credit allocation and appropriation, namely: 1 credit is equivalent to 12 notional learning hours. The structure of the proposed programme is as follows:

The French Department offers a four-year Bachelor of Arts programme that includes courses in both language and literature and civilisation. Students who have already studied French in secondary school may be permitted to begin the program at a higher level. Many students continue after completion of the programme to obtain the Post-graduate Degree in Education in order to teach in secondary schools.

Who would be interested in this programme?

Students who wish to speak other languages, who enjoy literature and cultural studies, or who are interested in international affairs and travel will find the programme rewarding.

What courses will be taken?

Students take a core curriculum of language and literature courses that enable them to speak, read, and comprehend French with a high level of competency. In addition, a broad array of optional courses enables them to choose the particular aspects of the field on which they wish to concentrate. These courses include topics in literature and philosophy, contemporary life and civilisation, linguistics, and French for specific purposes such as business, tourism, diplomacy, or translation.

What are the career opportunities?

The ability to speak another of the worlds’ most widely used languages opens many opportunities to students. Besides the chance to teach French in secondary schools or at the University level, French majors have the possibility to work in government, international business and commerce, tourism, journalism, and international law. You may choose to work in some Advertising agencies as an advertiser, a Copy writer. Other opportunities include working as Guide, Hostess, Hotel or Catering Administrator, Information Officer, Interpreter, Translator, Journalist or archivist, Private Secretary or Private Tutor.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Only candidates who passed FRENCH in the Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) or its equivalent may be admitted to Level 100 Group A ADVANCED.

Candidates without the above requirements may be admitted to Level 100 Group B BEGINNERS.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Combined Major Degree Programme

In a combined major Degree Programme, a student may take the following:

Semester 1

All core courses as follows: one core course at Levels 100(Group A Advanced), 200, 300 and 400; two core courses at Level 100 (Group B Beginners);

One optional course at Level 100 (Group A advanced) and two optional courses at Levels 200, 300 and 400. One of these optional courses shall be selected from the prescribed courses offered by other Departments in the Faculty of Humanities;

At least one elective at Levels 100, 200, 300, and 400, which may be taken from another department, depending on the students’ professional needs;

Semester 2

All core courses as follows: one core course at Levels 100 (Group A Advanced), 200, 300 and 400; two core courses at Level 100 (Group B Beginners);

At least one elective at Levels 100, 200, 300 and 400 which may be taken from another department, depending on the students’ professional needs;

To be awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree in a Combined Major Programme, a student must have obtained 24 credits in the core courses and at least 28 credits in the optional courses. The total number of credits must not be less than 52.

Combined Major/Minor (Where French is the Major)

In a combined Degree programme, where French is the Major, a student shall take the following:

Semester 1

All core courses as follows: one core course at Levels 100 (Group A Advanced), 200, 300 and 400; two core courses at Level 100 (Group B Beginners);

One optional course at Level 100 (Group A advanced), two optional courses at Level 200 and three optional courses at Levels 300 and 400. One of these optional courses shall be selected from the prescribed courses offered by other Departments in the Faculty of Humanities;

At least one elective, which may be taken from another department, depending on the students’ professional needs;

Semester 2

All core courses as follows: one core course at Levels 100 (Group A Advanced), 200, 300 and 400; two core courses at Level 100 (Group B Beginners);

At least one elective at Levels 100, 200, 300 and 400 which may be taken from another department, depending on the students’ professional needs;

To be awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree in a Combined Major Programme where French is a Major, a student must have obtained 24 Credits from the core courses and 36 credits from the optional courses. The total number of credits must not be less than 60.

Combined Minor/Major (Where French is the Minor)

In a combined degree programme, where French is the Minor, a student shall take the following:

Semester 1

All core courses as follows: one core course at Levels 100 (Group A Advanced), 200, 300 and 400; two core courses at Level 100 (Group B Beginners);

One optional course at levels 100(Group A Advanced) to 400;

At least one elective, which shall be taken from the Major subject;

Semester 2

All core courses as follows: one core course at Levels 100(Group A Advanced), 200, 300 and 400; two core courses at Level 100 (Group B Beginners);

One optional course at Levels 100 (Group A Advanced) to 400 provided that no optional course has been taken in the first semester;

At least one elective, which shall be taken from the Major subject;

A student shall normally take a total of up to three courses in French in Two semesters (one core course each semester and one optional course in two semesters), giving him/her up to 8 credits.

To be awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree in a Combined Programme where French is the Minor, student must have obtained 24 credits from the core courses and at least 8 credits from the optional courses. The total number of credits must not be less than 32.

Single Major

In a Single major degree Programme, a student shall take the following courses:

All core courses as follows: one core course at Levels 100 (Group A Advanced), 200, 300 and 400; two core courses at Level 100 (Group B Beginners);

One optional course at Level 100 (Group A advanced) and two optional courses at Level 200; five optional courses at Level 300, and six optional courses at Level 400. Two of these optional courses at Levels 300 and 400 shall be selected from the prescribed courses offered by other Departments in the Faculty of Humanities.

At least one elective, which may be taken from another department, depending on the students’ professional needs;

Semester 2

One optional course at Level 100 (Group A advanced) and two optional courses at Level 200; five optional courses at Level 300, and six optional courses at Level 400. Two of these optional courses at Levels 300 and 400 shall be selected from the prescribed list of courses offered by other Departments in the Faculty of Humanities

To be awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree in a Single Major Programme, a student must have obtained 24 credits from the core courses and 56 credits from the optional courses. The total number of credits must not be less than 80.

Multidisciplinary Combined degree Programme

In a Multidisciplinary Combined Degree Programme a student shall take a number of core and optional courses that will be determined by negotiation between him and the French Department.
