BUSINESS CLINIC

VACANCY NO: IRC 1945

Duties: The successful candidate will be required to devote 70% of his/her time performing coordination functions of the Business Clinic including i) to establish and maintain links with the industry; ii) to establish and maintain a business consultancy unit whose functions shall be to provide consultancy services to the public; iii) to effectively manage students’ activities associated with the Business Clinic’s mandate; iv) Managing the Business Clinic’s operational performance against established goals and objectives identifying areas for improvement and recommending corrective action needed.

20% of the candidate’s time shall be devoted to conducting research in his/her area of specialization while 10% shall be devoted to teaching, assessing and developing course materials as well as supervising student projects.

The candidate is also expected to perform any other tasks which are incidental to and aligned with the above key functions as may be directed by the Deputy Dean of the Faculty.

Requirements:

Candidates should have a minimum of PhD in any business related disciplines. The following shall be added advantages: i) A proven track record in developing and managing industry partnerships; ii) A proven record of providing consultancy services; iii) A minimum of 3 years’ experience in small business and entrepreneurship development, one of which is in a higher education context; iv) Evidence of engagement in research; v) Evidence of involvement in governance and community engagement; vi) Evidence of teaching at a University or comparable institution and vii) Demonstration of effective academic leadership.

N.B. Applicants with a relevant Masters’ Degree with at least a 2.1 pass of at least 3.6 may be considered under special circumstances for teaching and research.

VACANCY NO: IRC 1101 - LECTURER/COORDINATOR DISTANCE COURSES IN THE FACULTY OF BUSINESS

DUTIES: The successful candidate will be required to coordinate the development of distance education programmes of Faculty of Business, which will include: (i) liaising with academic departments in planning the conversion of the existing courses to the distance mode with a multi-media environment; (ii) receiving course outlines and assessment items from course tutors to posting on the WebCT, as well as ensuring that they are updated regularly and informing the CCE Programme Coordinator accordingly; (iii) monitoring materials development processes to ensure that writers, content reviewers and copy editors meet the agreed deadlines and participating in writing/tutors training and item setting workshops, in liaison with CCE Programme Coordinator; (iv) soliciting assessment items i.e. assignments, tests and examinations, and oversee their moderation including printing examination papers to ensure quality and confidentiality; (v) soliciting reading materials from course tutors and forwarding them to CCE to distribution to learners; (vi) liaising with Academic Services in the recruitment of students; (Vii) participating in learners academic registration, and providing career guidance and counselling (for distance learners) including maintaining up to date learner’s records; (viii) processing of pat-time tutors’ applications and assisting in monitoring and processing tutors’ claims, including maintaining up to date tutors’ records; (xi) assisting in quality assurance processes and procedures of all programmes; (x) engaging in teaching, develop materials as well as conduct research in his/her own area of specialization and (xi) perform any other duties that are assigned to him/her by the Deputy Dean.

Requirements: Applicants should have a Doctorate Degree in any of the business disciplines. The following will be added advantage: (i) Evidence of engagement in research; (ii) evidence of governance and social engagement; iii) Experience in Distance learning Education, teaching experience at a university or comparable institution and demonstration of effective academic leadership.

NB: In special circumstances, a relevant Master’s Degree with at least a 2.1 pass or equivalent may be considered.

DUTIES: The Dean shall participate in the formulation, implementation and evaluation of the academic policies and strategic plans of the University and shall promote excellence in the teaching, research and engagement programmes of the University. He/she shall provide academic leadership to the Faculty by planning, directing and coordinating the formulation and implementation of policies of the Faculty and by promoting engagement with relevant stakeholders.

By virtue of the office, the Dean shall be a member of all the boards and committees in the Faculty. In addition he/ she shall be a member of such committees of the Council and Senate as may be prescribed from time to time in the University Statutes.

REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have attained the rank of Associate Professor or above and must have been of that rank for at least twelve (12) months. In addition, the candidate should have excellent management, human relations and communication, organizational, analytical and coordinating skills. A very good understanding of the University’s system of governance will be an advantage as will be experience in student welfare and stakeholder engagement.

DURATION OF TERM OF OFFICE: The Dean shall be appointed for a minimum of three (3) years and may be re-appointed for a further term of three (3) years on the basis of satisfactory performance.

The Faculty of Business was established in 1997 and is one of the fast growing faculties in the University.

The 4844��Ѹ��’s new strategic plan “A Strategy for Excellence” has identified a strong vision for the University “To be a leading academic centre of excellence in Africa and the World” and identifies six strategic priority areas through which the Vision and Mission is to be accomplished. They comprise, Expanding Access and Participation, Providing Relevant and high quality programmes, Intensifying Research Performance, Strengthening Engagement, Improving student experience and Enhancing Human Resources to achieve excellence in Delivery.

In line with the above, the Faculty of Business has positioned itself to become one of the leading business schools in Africa and the rest of the world. We are very actively involved in addressing the strategic priority areas to achieve our vision. The Faculty has currently four academic departments, viz. Department of Accounting and Finance, Department of Management, Department of Marketing and Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management. These departments run undergraduate programmes in Accountancy, Finance, Business Information Systems, Business Management, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Management, Marketing, International Business and Tourism and Hospitality Management. In addition the Faculty offers Masters in Business Administration (MBA) with specialization streams in Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management, Information Systems and Tourism and Hospitality Management. These are market driven programmes that produce industry-ready graduates who will meet the expectations of our stakeholders. To expand the access and participation in these programmes, the Faculty offers most of these programmes on full time, part-time, modular and distance learning modes. The Faculty also continues to offer the Diploma in Accounting and Business Studies on part-time basis to cater to the training needs in the area of business.

The establishment of UB 4844��Ѹ�� School of Business (GSB) in the Faculty of Business provides a landmark in the effort of UB and of the Faculty to expand access and participation. With the vision to become one the pre-eminent Business Schools in the International Business School arena, the GSB will focus on graduate programme development, enhancement of research and offer a wide range of consultancy and executive education programmes.

Our PhD programme in Business and the membership of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) to represent Botswana in the largest research consortium worldwide, clearly illustrates our contribution to make UB a research intensive university in the very near future. The Faculty is also on its way to establish a Centre for Entrepreneurial Development within the Faculty of Business. This will enable the Faculty to produce more industry ready graduates by making entrepreneurship education more effective. Students will have meaningful interactions with entrepreneurs, will be involved in actual entrepreneurial projects, work in multi-disciplinary project teams and will be evaluated by entrepreneurs and investors as well as by academic staff. At present, the functions of the proposed Center is partially covered by the Business Clinic which is a unit working under the Faculty of Business. It provides entrepreneurship awareness and training to the students and gives them the opportunity to gain relevant practical business experience. Other activities in which the Business Clinic is engaged include training, counseling and advice to entrepreneurs, research and consultancy services.

Faculty of Business is also enthusiastic to enhance engagement with our stakeholders by playing an important role in capacity building through executive development programmes. We regularly run business skill development programmes both for private and public sectors. I also wish to add that UB has established linkages and partnerships with a number of top ranking Universities to strengthen its international and regional engagements. Prominent business schools use international partnerships to enhance their academic programmes, research, consultancy capacity and executive education and to attract qualified visiting faculty. We are actively engaged in partnership activities with Wharton Business School (University of Pennsylvania), Marshall School of Business (University of Southern California), Ohio University College of Business, Shanghai Normal University, Chartered Institute of Purchase and Supply, Bourse Africa and with Cresta Marakanelo in Botswana.

We are currently working in a climate of growth and change. This is exciting, challenging and rewarding.
