VACANCY NO: FHS/SPH01/2023 - AUDIOLOGY TECHNICIAN ( Contract Position) (Re-advert)

The main purpose of the job: To assist with the audiological evaluation of clients under the School of Public Health.

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to: (i) Perform audiological evaluations for the Audiologist, interpret and assist with testing, (ii) Perform audiological work for hearing aid programs such as registering clients for appointments, taking ear mould impressions, performing minor repairs to hearing instruments, completing paperwork for hearing instruments, ordering, repairing and replenishing supplies used for testing, (iii) Clean equipment and sterilizes instruments used for evaluations, (iv) Perform administrative duties for the Department such as recording statistics, receiving and answering daily correspondence, (v) Purge hearing aid records (vi) Preparing clients for testing, (vii) Prepare administrative promotional activities., viii) Perform any other duties as may be required by the Department.

Requirements: i) A Diploma in Communications Sciences and Disorders or similar with skills in audiology equipment and techniques, communication and computers; ii) Candidates with industrial experience will have an added advantage

VACANCY NO: 1025 - ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH/PUBLIC HEALTH/OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY

Applications are invited for the position of Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Environmental Health/Public Health/Occupational Health and Safety in the Department of Environmental Heath, Faculty of Health Science.

Duties:

The successful candidate will be expected to: (i) teach undergraduate courses in Public health; (ii) Preference will be given to candidates with teaching experience in Environmental Health or Occupational Health courses; (iii) demonstrate leadership in teaching, research and community service, including the long-range planning and management of individuals and multidisciplinary teams, (iv) take an active part in the supervision and assessment of undergraduate and graduate students’ research projects, (v) develop and implement mentorship activities for junior staff, (vi) raise research funds from funding agencies within and outside the University; (vii) facilitate partnerships internally and externally, (viii) serve in committees within the University and external professional organizations, (xi) Developing new programmes in public health and carrying out any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Head of Department.

Requirements:

The requirements for appointment at each rank are as follows:

Associate Professor

Candidates should have (i) Doctor of Philosophy in Public/Environmental Health/Occupational Health (ii) Master’s Degree in Environmental Health/Occupational Health/Master of Public Health, (iii) Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health or Occupational Health and Safety or Public health, (iv) at least 6 years relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (v) a minimum of 12 pieces of research products (e.g. articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc.) published by recognized publishers. 8 of these must be articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognized indexing databases. The remaining 4 publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc. published by recognized publishers. An academic book may be equivalent to a maximum of 4 articles in refereed/accredited journals, depending on the quality and standing of the publisher; (vi) sustained research output: a minimum of 2 peer reviewed publications every three years; (vii) sustained research activity; ongoing externally supported research (e.g., funded or commissioned); (viii) regular paper/poster presentations at national but also increasingly at international conferences; (vii) be lead and/or single author in at least one-third of the required journal publications. There should also be evidence of mentorship of early career scholars/graduate students; (ix) publications should be spread nationally and/or internationally and across journals; (x) recognizable research impact, including but not limited to citations, the h-index, patents, policy applications, peer reviews, publications that are prescribed texts in other institutions etc. (required in at least 2 of the these); (xi) recognized as being of national but increasingly international research standing (e.g. peer reviewing of new research proposals; reference in research committees; editor/guest editor/reviewer of refereed/accredited national and international publishers; editorial board member of an international publisher in a relevant field; invitations as keynote speaker at national and international conferences (required in at least 2 of the these); (xii) evidence of governance and social engagement; (xiii) research collaborations with other institutions or organisations; (xiv) research collaboration with cognate disciplines in the University; (xv) external examiner for Masters and/or PhD theses nationally and/or internationally. The following will be added an advantage: (i) research awards and other forms of research recognition, where appropriate.

Senior Lecturer

Candidates should have (i) Doctor of Philosophy in Public/Environmental Health/Occupational Health (ii) Master’s Degree in Environmental Health/Occupational Health/Master of Public Health, (iii) Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health/Occupational Health/Public Health. (iv) at least 3 years relevant teaching experience at a university or comparable institution; (v) A minimum of six (6) pieces of research products published by recognized publishers, four (4) of the six (6) being articles in refereed/accredited journals in internationally recognised indexing databases. The remaining 2 publications could be journal articles, book chapters, peer reviewed conference proceedings etc published by recognized publishers. Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to: (i) teach undergraduate and graduate courses in in Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Risk Assessment and Environmental Health Sampling Techniques; (ii) take an active part in the supervision and assessment of undergraduate and graduate students research projects; (iii) serve in committees within the University and external professional organizations.

Requirements: Candidates should have: (i) a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Environmental or Analytical Chemistry or in Chemistry; (ii) expertise in spectrometric techniques for analysis of pesticides, heavy metals and must be able to operate different analytical equipment; (iii) evidence of engagement in research; (iv) teaching experience at a University or comparable institution, Governance and Social Engagement will be added advantages.

NB: Applicants with a Master’s Degree in Environmental or Analytical Chemistry or Master of Science (Chemistry) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry or Applied Chemistry or Biology with at least a second class, first division (2.1) pass or equivalent may be considered. Lecturer appointees holding a Master’s Degree shall be appointed on contract with the possibility of renewal.

Entrance requirements

Prospective students must:

a) If entering the program through the direct entry route, satisfy the 4844��Ѹ�� General Academic Regulation 20.21 and the Faculty of Science Special Regulation 23.2 of the Faculty of Science. If already registered under the Faculty of Science under the General BSc Program, must have obtained at least a grade C in BIO 111 & 112; CHE 101&102; MAT 111&122;PHY111,119,121&129 at first year level.
b) If possessing a Diploma, satisfy General Academic Regulation 20.24.
c) Applicants with a Diploma in Environmental Health shall be admitted into level 200 or 300 of the degree programme on the basis of accumulated credits in the area of environmental health.

Assessment

1. Continuous Assessment shall be according to General Academic Regulations 00.81 and shall be based on tests and/or assignments and/or practical.
2. Final Examinations shall be conducted according to General Academic Regulations 00.82.

Progression from Semester to Semester

To proceed from one semester to the next, a student must pass at least 50% of the attempted semester credits and have a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or above as specified in General Academic Regulation 00.9.

Award of Degree

To be awarded a degree, a student must satisfy the relevant General Academic Regulations 00.85. The Degree shall be classified in accordance with the provisions of General Academic Regulations 20.4, with the cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above calculated in accordance with General Academic Regulation 00.86.

Environmental Health is the field of science that studies how the environment influences human health and disease. The 4844��Ѹ�� environmental health program is designed to provide a sound scientific base while allowing flexibility in the choice of advanced courses to develop individuals to be in a position to deal with complex environmental problems. Currently the department offers only the BSc. Environmental Health four year degree program.

The department has high quality staff who are involved in both research and teaching. DEH has state of the art laboratories which include, toxicology, food hygiene occupational hygiene and audiometric booths. These laboratories are used for teaching and research purposes and are also intended to help the department provide environmental and occupational assistance and services to government and industry, and also consultancy type services (e.g. technical analyses, laboratory analyses, environmental and workplace surveys).

Career opportunities

Once you complete your degree you can work in several organizations such as government ministries, the private sector and non-governmental organizations. You can work as a toxicologist,occupational hygienist, pollution control specialist, drinking water specialist, solid and hazardous waste specialist, food safety and hygiene specialist, health educationist, epidemiologist, emergency management specialist or an environmental health academic among other career options.
