This course offers a practical approach to effective communication in Setswana for everyday and professional contexts. It develops the four core skills which are reading, writing, listening, and speaking, through real-life scenarios. Learners practice introducing themselves, giving directions, and writing short documents like letters and reports. The course addresses common usage challenges in speaking and writing, helping learners identify and correct errors. It builds confidence by teaching strategies to avoid frequent mistakes in both oral and written communication. Interactive exercises are used to create an environment for active practice and skill application that enable learners to gain strategies to communicate clearly and effectively in diverse contexts. The course promotes cultural appreciation and strengthens interpersonal relationships. It opens doors to meaningful engagement in Botswana’s multilingual society. Ultimately, this course empowers learners to thrive in Botswana’s linguistic and cultural landscape.

PURPOSE

  • To have acquired and to demonstrate greater fluency in written and spoken Setswana in social situations.
  • To facilitate intercultural communication by applying knowledge, skills, and competence in Setswana.
  • To have the ability to conduct basic conversations in Setswana in familiar environments: making basic purchases at shops, using public transport, exchanging greetings, etc
  • To demonstrate the ability to speak and write about social situations, contemporary global issues and world culture in grammatically correct Setswana.
  • To be competent in composing and writing some short passages in Setswana.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • To acquire competence in pronouncing Setswana sounds and basic words
  • To develop basic vocabulary to hold a conversation.
  • To acquire competence in constructing basic Setswana sentences. 
  • To acquire competence in asking simple questions and responding to simple questions
  • To acquire competence in giving simple directions.

TARGET POPULATION

  • Non-native speakers of Setswana

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

  • As a beginner’s course, the course is intended for anyone who has no prior knowledge of Setswana and is interested in understanding Setswana.
  • Basic literacy skills.
