This Basic Ikalanga Language course for beginners aims at helping students develop a positive, constructive, and practical approach to effective written and oral communication for educational purposes and self-improvement. The course incorporates the four language skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking and provides practical language exercises in everyday situations such as introducing oneself, giving directions, writing short documents like a business letter, a report, etc. This course further introduces learners to common usage problems in speaking and writing in Ikalanga. It is aimed at enabling learners to identify usage errors and correct them. The course provides an environment for improving language skills and builds confidence by imparting skills to avoid common language errors in both spoken and written language, coaching in oral presentation skills as well as speech writing and delivery. It therefore requires learners to display and practice communication skills in different contexts.
PURPOSE
- To have acquired and demonstrate greater fluency in written and spoken Ikalanga in social situations.
- To facilitate intercultural communication by applying knowledge, skills, and competence in Ikalanga
- To have ability to conduct basic conversation in Ikalanga in familiar environments: making basic purchases at shops, using public transport, exchanging greetings, etc
- To demonstrate enablement to speak and write about social situations, contemporary global issues and world culture in good Ikalanga.
- To be competent in composing and writing some short passages in Ikalanga.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- To acquire competence in pronouncing Ikalanga sounds and basic words
- To develop basic vocabulary to hold a conversation.
- To acquire competence in constructing basic Ikalanga sentence.sÂ
- To acquire competence in asking simple questions and responding to simple questions
